Position Summary:

As part of a multidisciplinary team and under the supervision of a licensed provider (such as an
RN or Physician), the duties of this position include providing patient care in hospital emergency
departments (EDs) while adhering to applicable regulations and established standards of patient
care. Provides both direct and indirect patient treatment in the hospital emergency department
(ED) while adhering to licensure guidelines, with the consent and review of a Registered Nurse.


Completing nursing admission assessments, administering medications, assisting with patient
discharges, and providing patients with daily routine care and services are among the key
duties. Ability to react swiftly and precisely to alterations in a patient’s condition or reaction to
therapy, as well as effectively notifying the RNs and/or Physicians relevant parties of changes in
a patient’s status, symptoms, and diagnostic test findings.


Excellent customer service and proficient communication and organizational abilities are
required to ensure the provision of high-quality care in a manner that is culturally sensitive and
suitable. Employing initiative to independently complete recurring tasks in accordance with
established standards of care and the scope of licensure. Maintaining a safe and well-
organized patient and work environment while adhering to the safety, risk management, and
regulatory standards of the hospital, as well as seeking guidance from an RN or other
healthcare provider when confronted with difficult or unfamiliar situations, new specific
instructions, or challenging tasks.

Requirements:

  • Possession of a current Washington State license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Current healthcare provider BLS certification.
  • Graduation from an accredited Practical Nursing program

Job Duties:

Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, performs the following essential job functions in the hospital emergency setting:

  • Conducts initial assessments and collects pertinent patient information (e.g., weight, height, vital signs, drug allergies, presenting symptoms, etc.) through interviews; screens, communicates with, and responds to patients requirements in a manner consistent with his or her professional responsibilities.
  • Enters patient information into the electronic medical record in accordance with established procedures; maintains accurate and current nursing documentation.
  • Observes and communicates specific and general physical and behavioral signs and symptoms; identifies urgent/emergency situations and refers patients to an RN or other appropriate provider; and assesses and reports deviations from normal conditions.
  • Delivers direct patient care, assesses outcomes, and seeks advice from the RN, MD, and FNP as necessary; communicates any developments in the patient's condition to the appropriate personnel.
  • Observes the vital signs of the patient, exhibits expertise in cardiac surveillance, and detects arrhythmias.


Conducts and prepares the patient for routine laboratory, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures, including:

  • Responsible for procuring a diverse range of medical specimens and cultures, including pharynx cultures, blood and urine samples, and venipuncture to acquire blood specimens; coordinates the collection and retrieval of laboratory specimens; obtains specimens directly or through appropriate arrangements.
  • Ensures adequate stock of supplies and properly functioning equipment; keeps work areas clean and neat.
  • Assists physicians and staff with procedures.
  • Conducts patient discharge activities in accordance with established protocols; maintains contact with the patient as required following discharge.
  • Conveys educational and informational content by means of reviewing discharge instructions during the process of patient discharge.
  • Reports to the accountable staff nurse which components of the discharge procedure have been finalized.
  • Delivers nursing care to receiving facilities in preparation for the discharge of the patient to a post-acute environment.
  • Transports patients in a manner that ensures their safety and comfort; returns all equipment (e.g., stretcher, wheelchair); notifies floors when a patient is being transported; and provides healthcare personnel with feedback on incidents that occur during the transport period.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics to avoid workplace injuries while transferring patients.
  • Demonstrates decorum and respect towards patients, visitors, and staff; readily offers assistance to other departments when requested with tasks.
